A door-to-door bus service in Ribble Valley, Lancashire is able to continue serving mobility-restricted residents in the area thanks to a new set of wheels provided by a donation from the borough council. The service, dubbed the Little Green Bus, has proved a life line for elderly and vulnerable residents in the area as it helps them gain more independence in their daily lives.

There are many elderly and vulnerable residents in the area that rely on aids such as electric stair lifts and wheelchairs to maintain a degree of independence in the home, and this community bus service adds to such aids to provide independence outside the home. Residents can go out and be social and take care of their own shopping with the help of the Little Green Bus.

So called for its environmentally-friendly nature, the service actually uses a blue bus having recently benefitted from a new “blue” Mercedes Sprinter as a result of a £6,200 donation from Ribble Valley Borough Council, as well as money from Ribble Valley Homes, the Yorkshire Building Society and Lancashire County Council. The service is door-to-door and fully accessible to residents of all mobility capacities, offering an affordable mode of transport that can work alongside other modes of aid and care that work towards a more independent way of life for elderly and vulnerable residents in the area.

Started four years ago, the Little Green Bus has five buses and 27 volunteer drivers in total, benefitting over 300 vulnerable and elderly residents from 50 different community groups.

Residents of Ribble Valley can benefit from well-rounded assisted mobility in daily life with the help of the bus service and the extensive range of mobility aids available from Handicare, including their range of bathroom accessories and walk in showers for the elderly.
