Our frequently asked questions

Prices roughly start from £5,500, but a quotation can depend on the work involved, your requirements and any additional work you would like to get done in your bathroom. The simplest way to determine what the exact price will be is to arrange a free, no-obligation home survey.

A Handicare surveyor will visit your home to discuss your needs and to identify what work is required, which products will suit you and your bathroom best and provide a written quotation. The visit can take up to 60-90 minutes, is completely free and no obligation. Feel free to invite a friend or family member along too.

Walk in showers are generally in a cubicle and are independent from the rest of the bathroom. Some models feature toughened safety features, such as glass around the outside of the shower and raised shower trays. Wet rooms are a popular choice for many modern bathrooms, but they normally do not include shower trays; the water instead flows directly into a drain in the floor. Some models come with wet room screens, but the space will need to be waterproofed and have a tiled floor and walls. Wet rooms serve as great accessible showers, allowing wheelchair users enough space to move around as they wash.

When Handicare arrives to survey your bathroom, the surveyor will ask you a series of questions which will help them to recommend the best solution. In some cases they may advise you speak to an Occupational Therapist for a second opinion. This process ensures that when the product is installed, it is ideal for your bathroom and your specific needs.

Timing can vary depending on location and what is ordered but Handicare aims to have most installations started within 4-6 weeks of the day you place your order. If the installation is related to an urgent care need, please the team know and they’ll do their best to prioritise and schedule it as quickly as possible.

Handicare dedicates a working week to an installation, starting on the Monday with the aim to be finished by the Friday, to ensure there is more than enough time to complete a quality installation. On average installations, with the exception of wetrooms, are completed in 2-4 days.

Where it is inevitable that the new shower or bath won’t be ready to use until the installation’s finished, Handicare will not leave you without any water or toilet facilities overnight. It orders all products to your property to arrive on the first day of the installation, so there is no need to wait in for parts to arrive days or weeks before the jobs starts. Handicare will also have all the waste material collected at the end of the week.

You may be eligible for government assistance but please note, this is means-tested so timescales vary and eligibility is not always guaranteed. It is recommended that you contact your local authority for further information. If successful, they will take care of everything for you in terms of finding an installer to do the work for you.

Yes. You’ll benefit from a 12 months installation warranty on all installations and ancillary equipment (for example shower chairs, electrical items and heating fittings). In addition to this, all products are supplied with their own manufacturer’s product guarantees (please ask an advisor for further details).

Walk-in showers are the most common and cost effective installed solution and can be installed to replace a traditional bath tub or form part of a complete bathroom makeover. Walk-in showers have a low level step in shower tray, grab rails and thermostatically controlled showers with multiple choices of screens to suit your taste or requirements. They are suitable whether you are showering independently or with assistance from a caregiver.

Walk-in baths come in different shapes and sizes you can choose from a range of products to suit your bathroom and needs. They come with thermostatic bath taps, slip resistant floors and easy to open doors; an ideal replacement for a traditional bath tub. Please note, unlike traditional bath tubs, you need to step into the tub and shut the door before filling it. Before getting out the bath, the water must drain away before the door can be opened.

Wetrooms are a popular choice for modern bathrooms, but instead of a shower tray they have a former, which sits in your floor under the slip resistant wetroom flooring, creating a spacious shower area. Wetroom former trays can come in many sizes to suit many bathrooms and the water which falls in the shower area will directly drain away. Wetrooms are great for those with walking aids, wheelchairs or just wanting to future proof their property.

The installation enginner will carry out a demo of the bathroom once it has been installed. All you will need to do is make sure the bathroom is maintained as per the manufacturing instructions. Handicare offers a 12-month installation warranty, plus manufacturer guarantees on all products and ancillary equipment (e.g., shower chairs, electrical items). Please speak with one of the team on site or email [email protected] if you have any queries after installation.

The water will have to be turned off for periods of time during the installation whilst the work is ongoing but we will try our best to inform you of how long and when it will be back on. If your toilet is being replaced, or you only have access to one toilet in your property, please get in touch to speak with one of the Handicare team members and they will be able to advise further.

Yes. We highly recommend that you, and any supportive contacts are on site on the installation days, to stay updated as to progress or advise on any changes. If you feel the disruption would be too much and you wish to move out whilst the work is being done, please let us know and we can work with you in regard to time frames and suitable dates. We would still advise that someone be on site at the property for the duration of the installation and to let us gain access to the property.
