Stairlift installation

Stairlift installation involves a professional team installing a rail to the staircase treads, followed by the chair and safety features. It is a relatively quick procedure that should only take around four hours for a straight stairlift and slightly longer for a custom-fitted curved stairlift. After installation, the stairlift experts will provide a demonstration on how to use the stairlift safely before they leave.

Frequently asked questions

During stairlift installations, Handicare’s expert technician will first assess your home before any work is carried out. Then a track is attached to brackets that support the rail. The track keeps the stairlift rail elevated from the stairs. The brackets are then attached to the treads of the stairs with between two and five screws (per bracket). This means that during a stairlift installation, there will be no damage to the banister or to the walls surrounding the staircase at the top or bottom of the stairs. The stairlifts are always installed at a reasonable distance from the wall or banister to prevent any scuffing or scraping. If you are thinking about installing a stairlift, you should never try to do it yourself; always seek a professional and reputable stairlift company.

As the brackets hold the stairlift track above the floor, it should not damage the carpet. The support screws also pass through the carpet, so there is no need to lift and refit the carpet when installing a stairlift. The support screws have a small diameter, so they should not leave large, visible holes. There may be some indentation from the weight, or the carpet beneath the supports may be a different colour if it has faded elsewhere.

A stairlift should not damage your stairs as long as it is installed by an expert. With indoor stairlifts, where the brackets have been attached to the carpet or wooden threads, there will be a few tiny holes that require minimal attention.

There are lots of different stairlifts available on the market – some are designed to fit curved staircases, such as a curved stairlift, while others for straight staircases, like a straight stairlift. There are also stairlifts designed for narrow staircases. For people who are unsure, please make an enquiry and an expert will be happy to recommend.

Installation time depends on the type of stairlift. A straight stairlift can usually be installed within a few hours. Curved stairlifts, which are made to measure, may take a little longer but are typically completed within half a day. Once installed, the engineer will carry out full safety checks and testing. They will then provide a complete demonstration, showing you how to operate the stairlift, use the safety features, and clean and maintain it properly. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions to ensure you feel confident before they leave.

The cost of installing a stairlift varies depending on the model you choose and the layout of your home. For example, a curved stairlift can cost more than a straight stairlift as the rail needs to be moulded to fit the unique shape of the stairs, so the chair can traverse any landings or bends. Once you have had a free home assessment, an estimate of the installation cost will be provided.

Yes, you can rent a stairlift instead of buying a stairlift. As our stairlift rental guide highlights, it is usually only cost effective if you rent for up to 18 months only.

All Age UK Trading stairlifts, provided by Handicare, come with a two-year warranty as standard. The warranty comes with one free service, and we also have a range of extended warranties you can choose from. Read our stairlifts servicing and support for more information.
