Top products for your walk in bath

18th August 2014

Having a bath is supposed to be a relaxing time, but for those who suffer from reduced mobility, it can be a painful and uncomfortable experience. Make bathing enjoyable again with the installation of a beautiful walk in bath and these top products that relax muscles and rejuvenate the body. Some can even be made at home!

Home-made
Even those who are not particularly creative can enjoy making bath products not only because the end product can relieve joint pain, but also because the process itself is relatively easy and therapeutic. Even with limited mobility, there are plenty of luxurious products that can be made cheaply and effectively that make the process of bathing in accessible walk in showers and baths even more enjoyable.

There are numerous recipes and methods out there for how to make a bath bomb or bubble bath, but the best ones are those that are easy to make, with ingredients that are easily found in your cupboard or the local supermarket. The following bath soak looks to relieve muscle and joint pain and is made from easily-sourced ingredients:

Ingredients:

- 2 cups of epsom salts

- 1 cup of sea salt

- ½ cup of baking soda

- 15-20 drops of essential oil – lavender, chamomile and bergamot are perfect for relaxing and soothing muscles and joint pain.

The method for this easily-to-make bath soak is to simply mix them together, store in a cool, dark place and use within a couple of months. Then just add ½-1 cup of the bath soak to your walk in bath and soak for 15-20 minutes to feel all aches and pains wash away.

You can also try adding singular ingredients to your regular bath to help with joint pain. Epsom salts are great on their own and are known to be a good source of magnesium, which the body soaks up when you bathe in it and soothes aching muscles, regulates blood pressure and heals skin cells. Epsom salts, which are readily available from health stores such as Holland and Barrett, are also known to reduce swelling, help bruises heal and act as a great detox.

Best brands

For those who’d prefer to buy their bathing products rather than make them, there are numerous brands out there producing bathing products that are suitable for elderly skin, joint pain and those with reduced mobility. All too often people are under the impression that such brands as Lush or Molton Brown only produce products for beautifying or the young, but in reality there are numerous products in their lines that are perfect for ageing skin and reduced mobility.

Lush’s Blackberry Bath Bomb recipe includes bergamot, which is known for its aromatherapy benefits and is great for relaxing.

As soon as you drop this into your bath, tension is banished as the bergamot and frankincense oils are released. Bergamot is used in aromatherapy for anxiety, depression and nervous tension, and is both relaxing and uplifting as well as antibacterial. You’ll soon feel calmed as frankincense oil helps slow down breathing and induces a feeling of wellbeing. - Lush

As this bath bomb holds great healing and relaxing properties it is a worthy investment for your physical and mental wellbeing at just £2.95.

Drying off

While a relaxing bath may be incredibly enjoyable, getting out and drying off can be a difficult and, at times, painful experience for those who suffer from reduced mobility. As such, some clever companies have been working hard to develop products that can help make the whole process easier and more relaxing.

Medoris provides specialist care products that make daily situations, such as bathing, easier for those with mobility difficulty. The Dri-Me Towelling Shower Robe is perfect for drying quickly and effectively, with its absorbent material and unique design making drying after a bath or shower comfortable and easy.

Cleaning and safety
Reduced mobility can often make the process of bathing a difficult task, but home electric stair lift users can bathe safely with walk in baths and showers, making it just as enjoyable now as it has always been. Using certain items in a walk in bath can make the process even more enjoyable and safe; bath mats and long-handled body brushes can go a long way to helping maintain independence in the bathroom, as well as preventing extra pressure being put on painful joints and strained muscles.

There are also numerous cleaning products on the market that are aimed at sensitive skin so that older and thinner skin doesn’t have to suffer in the process of keeping your new walk in bath clean and sparkling.

Ecover is a great brand that have a series of home cleaning products for the bathroom that are good for the environment and good for the skin, thanks to their dedication to not using any brash and abrasive chemicals. Their bathroom cleaner and limescale remover in particular work just as well as other products on the market without damaging the environment – or your skin!

Having recently rebranded, their products have a great new look that makes it easy to see where they are good for the environment. Just look out for the new easy-to-spot icons that highlight some of the features of their products, which include:

- made from plant-based and mineral ingredients
